Coastal Cup #5 – Squamish

Coastal Cup #5 – Squamish

A theme – Just wait a minute !

Now it wouldn’t be right to have a Coastal Cup event without a little rain – just wait a minute. Oh, I thought this was a lift – just wait a minute. What happened to the breeze – just wait a minute!! Manquam Blind Channel in Squamish threw everything it had at the 11 IOM sailors who spent the day competing in what turned out to be a 20 race regatta.

Winds were generally from the south plus or minus 25 degrees in the 3 – 14 knot range ( all of these in each race !! ). Competitors who could keep their heads out the the boat were rewarded handsomely. As well, there was a certain amount of pure luck for everyone from time-to-time to keep it exciting and interesting.

Everyone seemed to adjust to their fate amazing well and enjoyed the sunshine in the afternoon.
On the scoreboard Jason Rhodes showed us the way to deal with the shifty conditions. Jason was followed by Steve Kensey who demonstrated that consistency pays in the long run, and how to claw back from bad luck. Next up in third place was Jerry Brower in his slippery gray VISS. Congratulations to all on the podium, you guys sailed well !

Thanks to everyone for chipping in on the RC duties allowing everyone to sail, and to Art Prufer for the great custom Beer Glass trophies and Brian Woodward for bringing the marks! And a thanks to Don Martin for loaning his dinghy for mark and rescue duty (yes a few rescues were needed) despite not being able to attend this one himself. Lastly thank you Brian Woodward for the herculean effort to get this one organized, and for writing this recapture of the fun event !

Next up for the Coastal Cup series is Lake Cowichan on Aug 22….see you there!

Cheers,
Your 2026 Coastal Cup Committee
