The Great Ocean Race and Coastal Cup #2 (Nanaimo)

The Great Ocean Race and Coastal Cup #2 (Nanaimo)

What a weekend it was in Nanaimo !!

The Great Ocean Race 2025 and CC 2 are in the books – the fun continues!

On a beautiful sunny Saturday with a SE breeze of 4-8 knots, the Great Ocean Race saw 5 of our IOM’ers enter the race. Three in IOM’s, one 2 Metre, and one DF95. With plenty of current and shallow waters to navigate, Peter Grimm took line honors with his maxi 2 Metre, followed by IOM’s Steve Kinsey, Don Martin and Steve Kibble, with Wilson Chong leading all the Lasers in his DF 95.  This is a very fun event with wonderful food, beverages, prizes and camaraderie following, and well worth entering next year!

On to Sunday and CC 2 in Nanaimo did not disappoint!
The racing was epic, the venue was superb and it didn’t rain as hard as CC 1, but it was very close !!!

We owe a special thank you to Tim Daniel and Nanaimo YC for opening their facility to us for CC 2.   Our original plan evaporated when we discovered some logistic problems at the Dinghy Dock Pub.    Tim and NYC came to our rescue and ran an awesome event for us!   Special mention and thanks to Art for his continued web and scoring support and to Steve Kibble for mark setting.

The day arrived with clouds and showers and a building SE breeze.  Tim set a nice windward/leeward course and the snakes and ladders got underway.   The flood current was fairly strong in the morning and created some interesting opportunities.   The breeze built to the top of the A rig and beyond, prompting a switch to B rigs later in the day.

Did we mention snakes and ladders.   Competition was stiff throughout the fleet….7 of 12 boats had a 1st place finish.    Mike Kidd turned on the afterburners in the afternoon when his A rig failed and banged off 3 firsts as an early convert to B.   Steve Kinsey took a 3 race break to resuscitate his transmitter and came back to win the day.   Peter Grimm was the bridesmaid just 2 points behind Steve followed by Mike Kidd.   Jerry Brower started strong but things kind of fell apart mid-day when his keel bulb decided to leave.

Following the GOR lead, wonderful food, beverages, prize giving, and camaraderie closed off the event in a local pub. Speaking of prize giving, since an executive quorum was available it was decided that one had to be present to collect a valuable prize!
Best Sportsman was easily decided for Tim Daniel standing in the wet, cold, rain to run our event top notch! Best Owner/Boat relationship went to Mike Kidd when his boat told him to switch to a B Rig before everyone else (getting 3 firsts ! ). Runner up went to Peter Grimm, and Overall went to Steve Kinsey.

See you all in Kelowna May 10 & 11 for your first 2 day event!
